The Most Popular Starbucks Holiday Drink Where You Live Is…

The Pumpkin Spice Latte may dominate all fall conversation—the flavor is part of a $361 million business, after all—but during the winter months, the U.S. gets as divided as people live-tweeting the Oscars red carpet. And not just because of what these drinks are wearing (ahem, red cups and not-so-ugly sweater koozies).

Starbucks compared its most-sold holiday beverages across America, revealing an interesting insight: While the Eggnog, Gingerbread and Peppermint Mocha may be the flavors you immediately associate with sweater-and-snowboot weather, they’re not nearly as popular as Caramel Brulée. The Butterbeer-esque drink is remarkably popular in 15 states.

In Hawaii, it’s most often ordered as a Frappuccino. In the Midwest, where most of the other states reside (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and Oklahoma, just to name a few), it’s preferred as a hot latte, which makes sense, given the average December and January temperatures in those areas.

A close second, by sheer number of states, is the Gingerbread Latte. It’s popular in Washington, D.C. and 11 states within the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, particularly the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama and Maryland.

Interestingly, the three states with the largest populations stand out from the rest of the nation, refusing to conform to regional tastes: Texas prefers the Chestnut Praline Latte, served piping hot, while Florida likes to celebrate its version of a White Christmas with a whipped cream-topped Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino. Meanwhile, the 39 million-plus people living in California are torn between both of those flavors, but they’ve got to be iced.

Another growing favorite is the Holiday Spice Flat White; it just hit Starbucks menus a little over a month ago, and it’s already taken over the Northeast, becoming the most popular holiday drink in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, and five other states. It’s been so popular, in fact, that Starbucks warned it may sell out soon in some areas—meaning you’ll have to wait a grueling 11 months to see it again, if the chain brings it back.

If it’s already gone, the company recommends ordering a regular Flat White and asking the barista to add gingerbread syrup to it, which comes pretty close to the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove and tangerine sugar spices in the seasonal version.

The Western U.S. loves cinnamon-spiced drinks, too, only they tend to favor the tried-and-true over the brand-spanking new. In states like Montana, Nevada and Colorado, the PSL continues its reign through the end of the year.

If you move just farther Northwest, though, you’ll hit the Eggnog Latte-worshipping section of the States. In Oregon, Alaska and in Washington—where you can find Starbucks’ HQ—the nutmeg-dusted drink is the most-requested. This is another beverage that’s selling so quickly it’s on the endangered drinks list, Starbucks says (Editor’s Note: Though the “Endangered Drinks List” isn’t an actual Starbucks term, you’re welcome to take it and make it a thing, guys.).

If it’s sold out in your area, resist the urge to order a coffee and add store-bought eggnog to it; baristas recommend just going with a Gingerbread Latte instead. You’ll get some similar spice notes and creaminess.
