EXCLUSIVE: If You Love Cotton Candy Grapes, You Need To Try Rock-It Grapes
Adulthood manifests itself in many forms, but a keen interest in grapes is one of the main ways you can tell you’re slowly morphing into your mother. As a kid, fruit was a means to an end — a healthy snack that, once finished, could be washed down with something more sinful, like Chips Ahoy or Dunkaroos. But with age, it’s possible to find satisfaction in the produce aisle.
Grape breeders — known henceforth as magicians — are working overtime to cross-pollinate existing varietals to create fruit in the craziest shapes and flavors. First it was Witch Fingers (now known as Teardrops), named for their freakishly long and knobby silhouettes. Then came Cotton Candy grapes. People had meltdowns at grocery stores in search of the green grape that tastes like the carnival treat with a far lower calorie count. (Before you grab your car keys, know this: You can only find them in August and September.)
Now, Walmart’s exclusively stocking something new. They’re called Rock-It grapes, and they’re the brainchild of International Fruit Genetics, the same people behind the Teardrops and Cotton Candy. The term is an obvious nod to the fruit’s elongated form and pointy end, but the bite isn’t as straightforward: They crunch like a green grape but have the sweetness of a purple one. Rock-It grapes are have subtle flavor, so you can pop ’em like candy and not get tired of the taste.
You can get a two-pound pack of the grapes at Walmart for $4.48 until the season ends in late December.
