We were Leslie Knope-level ecstatic when we found out McDonald’s was testing a chicken and waffles sandwich because waffles are the quintessential breakfast and brunch dish. And now Dunkin’ Donuts is celebrating National Waffle Day by adding a new Belgian waffle sandwich to its menu.
Layered between a pair of thick, crispy-edged Belgian waffles is cherrywood-smoked bacon, egg, and American cheese. Basically, this sounds like pure brunch bliss. “With our new Belgian Waffle Breakfast Sandwich, we are able to make the taste of this traditional favorite available on-the-go, any time of day for our guests,” executive chef Jeff Miller said in a press release.
The thing is, we shouldn’t be entirely surprised by this brilliance. Dunkin’ first offered a waffle sandwich back in 2009 and was the first quick-serve chain to do so. It wasn’t a permanent menu item and made a comeback in 2010 and then another revival in 2011. But this is the first time a Belgian style waffle is doing the sandwiching.
What’s more, the brand is launching a contest called “Savor the Flavor,” where customers scratch off a virtual waffle-themed card for daily opportunities to win Dunkin’ prizes like one year of free breakfast sandwiches. The game begins August 24 and runs through September 30, so you have over a month’s worth of chances to take home freebies.
