The life of a chef is notoriously difficult. They work long hours, hardly ever take vacations, and are often paid very little for their time. Jamie Oliver, however, has defied those odds and then some, as he was just named Britain’s wealthiest chef and is possibly the richest chef in the world.
According to the Sunday Times’ 2012 Rich List, Oliver is worth about 150 million Euros or $243.9 million. He beat out rival British chefs Gordon Ramsay and Delia Smith to take home the gold for wealthiest British chef. Oliver was also named one of the wealthiest authors in Britain, second only to author of the Harry Potter
series, JK Rowling.

Eater reports that Jamie Oliver was named the second most successful chef last year by the Daily Meal. Wolfgang Puck took the number one spot, estimated to be worth a total of $400 million. Alain Ducasse and Paula Deen also made the top five.
In 2008, Forbes had Rachael Ray at the top of its list of richest chefs. Ranking the chefs by yearly income instead of total worth, Rachael Ray was named the richest, raking in a whopping $18 million a year. Wolfgang Puck was named second on the Forbes
list, with a yearly income of $16 million. Paula Deen, Alain Ducasse, and Mario Batali were also considered, each making between $3 and $5 million per year.

His competition aside, Oliver has had an extremely successful year. According to Eater, Oliver’s newest cookbook, 30-Minute Meals, broke sales records. Add that to his 30 Italian restaurants, television shows, and other merchandise, and Jamie has apparently earned a cool 44 million Euro since he was named the second most successful chef last spring.
While it remains unclear whether or not Jamie Oliver is actually the richest chef in the world, considering that Star Chef reports the average chef lives off of a salary between $30,000 and $80,000 (only an executive chef can earn up to $80,000) per year, it looks like Oliver has done pretty well for himself.
