Foreign Versions of American Sweets That We Hope Will Come to the States
/ 0 Comments / Food Trends /
You can usually find the sweets you enjoy in the U.S. when you’re traveling around the world, thanks to the globalization of products. But in some countries, the products you’re used to come in different flavor profiles. Here were take a look at 13 versions of sweet treats that we really wish would come to the U.S.
Looking for more country-specific eats? Check out these unusual foods to try when you’re traveling around the world.
Matcha Green Tea Kit Kat Bars
Japan has a seemingly endless amount of interesting Kit Kat flavors (there’s even have a shop dedicated solely to gourmet Kit Kat bars) that aren’t available in the U.S., including pear, cinnamon cookie, brown sugar syrup, and edamame soybean. But we’re really craving the version that features those classic crunch wafers covered in creamy, rich Matcha Green Tea. If you’re stuck stateside, Matcha Kit Kat bars are available for order through Amazon.
Hershey’s Brazil
Hershey’s Paçoca
Paçoca is a traditional Brazilian candy made with ground peanuts and sugar. Hershey’s Brazil rightly figured that the sweet and salty treat would pair well with chocolate, so the company offers a mouthwatering paçoca bar dipped in chocolate in that market.
McDonald’s Italy
Baci McFlurry
In case you’ve never had Baci, the chocolates are made by Ferrero, the same company behind the best invention of all time, Nutella. Baci are pretty much a chocolate truffle version of Nutella with the addition of a whole hazelnut in the middle. Mix those up with some soft serve, McFlurry-style, and we’re sold. Baci McFlurries are found in Ferrero’s home country: Italy.
Mint Kit Kat
If you are a York Peppermint Patty or a Mint Chocolate Chip fan, then you’re sure to lust after this chocolaty and minty version of a Kit Kat found in Great Britain. They give the stellar mint-chocolate flavor combination a classic Kit Kat crunch factor.
Starbucks
Green Tea and Red Bean Frappuccino
Red bean might sound like an odd addition to a sweet blended beverage (we’ll refrain from calling Frappuccinos what they really are — caffeinated milkshakes), but sweetened red bean is often found in Asian desserts. The Red Bean Green Tea Frappuccino is offered by Starbucks in China and Asia Pacific locations, and it’s absolutely delicious. The sweet beans pair wonderfully with earthy green tea.
M&M’s Mix-Ups
This Australian product is absolutely genius as far as we’re concerned. Can’t decide which kind of M&Ms to buy? No problem! Original, crispy, and peanut are thrown together in this mix-up. When you stick your hand in the bag, you never know what you’ll get next!
Kraft Foods Inc.
Duo Dulce De Leche And Banana OREOs
Not only does Argentina have OREO Duos (two frosting flavors are featured on the same cookie), they have a Dulce De Leche flavor. It’s paired with banana-flavored frosting, and it’s quite popular throughout Argentina.
All British Chocolate
Have you ever had a British version of an American candy bar? Whether it’s a Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, or Reese’s, the bar will look exactly the same, but somehow it will taste better. Just like Coca-Cola and other sodas, chocolate brands are modified slightly to cater to varying taste preferences in markets around the world. American chocolate tends to contain more sugar than its British counterparts, as well as less cocoa solids. While it really does come down to any given person’s particular taste buds, the grass is sometimes greener across the pond!
McDonald’s Switzerland
Toblerone McFlurry
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of eating a Toblerone chocolate bar, you already know why we wish American McDonald’s locales offered Toblerone McFlurries. Switzerland is known for its high-quality, creamy chocolate, so it’s only natural that the Swiss McDonald’s headquarters dreamed up this drool-worthy idea.
Kraft Foods Inc.
Green Tea Ice Cream OREOs
We have already expressed our jealousy about green tea-flavored everything, but these OREOS make us want to burst into tears. First of all, ice cream sandwich OREOS?! And then they had to go and add the green tea. We’d travel across the globe (to China, specifically) just to get a taste of these frozen treats.
Starbucks
Yoghurt Frappuccino
The Greek yogurt trend is still going strong, and Starbucks has capitalized on it with its Yogurt Frappuccinos. Only available in Greece, they come in strawberry and banana flavors. We think the smoothie-like beverage would do well in U.S. markets, too!
