This vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, plant-based frozen dessert is so many things — yet ‘spot-on sub for ice cream’ isn’t one of them. It’s more like Italian ice, and the flavors are more like the lip balm-version of what the food should taste like (imagine the waxy taste of s’mores LipSmackers, as opposed to actual s’mores). Sweet Habit’s the only brand in the mix to sell its ice cream in a size larger than a single pint. The flavor’s pretty spot-on, but each one makes you wish there was more: more mix-ins, more ribbons of peanut butter or caramel or whatever it’s promising. Guess that’s why it’s low-cal.

Technically, this is frozen Greek yogurt, and most tasters found it pretty middle-of-the-pack. It lives up to its claims, but it’s more of the dessert you eat when you’re trying to be healthy, not necessarily the dessert you crave. Still, the flavors were bold (particularly Coffee Brownie Break), and the mix-ins great, albeit scarce.

It’s America’s bestselling pint, and for good reason: There are dozens of creative flavors to choose from, all clocking in at less than 400 calories per pint — and plenty of protein. These need to be left out a while to thaw before tasting, but the flavor is rich, and the texture’s creamy. Some complained that it left a film in their mouths afterward, though.

Yet another contender in the higher-protein, lower-calorie market, Enlightened’s ice cream edged out Halo Top for the No. 4 spot, largely due to its creamier texture and surprising flavors, like Movie Night, with its buttered popcorn ice cream and caramel swirl.

One year ago, we never would’ve imagined Arctic Zero would be No. 3 on our list. The ice cream itself was, to be blunt, icy and borderline inedible to us, which is why we were hesitant when the brand announced a whole new product line. But our team tested it — and we were stunned. It’s smooth, and the flavors lingered, but not in a filmy way. More like a “Can I have another pint?” way.
